Clifford Ray “Sonny” Carter, 77, of Connersville, died Monday, December 19, 2016, at his residence. Clifford was born in Connersville, January 27, 1939, to Ray Kenneth and Marguerite Rebecca Powell Carter. He attended Connersville area schools and was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1962. Clifford served as a Specialist 4th Class with the 11th Infantry, 5th Infantry Division based at Fort Carson, Colorado, prior to his discharge in 1963. He retired from Roots Blower and had previously worked at Connersville Casket Company. Currently, Clifford was employed as the bartender at the American Legion. He was a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and 40 et 8. Clifford loved spending time with his family and his friends. He was an avid racing fan and Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio was his favorite track. In addition to his parents, Clifford is preceded in death by his sisters: infants Darlene and Kay Carter, Phyllis Ann Hall and Carolyn Sue Powell; his former wife who died in 1987: Ruth Ann Cox Carter, whom he married July 2, 1966. Clifford is survived by his children: Matthew L. Carter and Janell S. Isaacs, both of Connersville; his siblings and their spouses: Becky L. Chaney and Robert of Connersville, Harold Carter and Phyllis of Shelbyville; his grandchildren: Jordan Smith of New Mexico, Derek Carter of Centerville, Shanelle Carter of Connersville, Alex, Devin and Emily Carter, all of Boston; Austin Carter of Laurel; Rae-Ann Isaacs of Craig, Colorado; Lucinda L. and James A. Isaacs Jr., both of Connersville; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Rob Mullins of Richmond, officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery with military honors by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday where memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette County Veterans Council.
