Edgar E. “Hafey” Riebsomer, 91, of Connersville, died Sunday morning, January 15, 2012, at his residence.
A Connersville native, “Hafey” was born September 23, 1920 to Joseph and Daisy M. Spivey Riebsomer. He was a 1939 graduate of Alquina High School and was a lifetime resident of Connersville. For over thirty years, “Hafey” was employed locally as a salesman of General Motors and Ford cars. He had also worked as a Moorman Feed representative and had been employed at Auto Pro and Conway Auto Parts. Following retirement, “Hafey” was a dedicated employee of Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Homes. As a member of the First Baptist Church for over thirty years, he served as a deacon, usher and was involved in the jail and food pantry ministries. “Hafey” liked to stay active and was most content when he was helping others. He currently was a member of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Connersville Eagles, Moose and Elks. In his leisure time, he took great pride in caring for his lawn and growing tomatoes to share with others.
“Hafey” is survived by his wife, Eilene Gulley Struewing Riebsomer whom he married June 10, 1989 at the First Baptist Church; daughters and their spouses: Rebekah Spivey of Bloomington, Carleene Collins and David of Connersville, Debra Liedeke of Clearwater, Florida, Karen VanWinkle and Gary of Liberty, Judy LaMar and Bruce of Carmel; a daughter-in-law: Aileen Riebsomer of Falkirk, Scotland; thirteen grandchildren and their spouses: Casey Snedegar, Aimee McIver, Beth Resau, Laurie Hamilton and Don, Pam Wilson and Mark, Kim Schroeder and Rob, Chris Pebworth, Michelle Leftwich, Gary VanWinkle and Angie, Natalie Glase and Jimmy, Casey Poer and Cathy, Kellie Sturgis, Chad Sturgis and Raynelle; 26 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and special friends: David Brynelson and wife, Becky of Wisconsin; Phil Hodgkin and wife, Janet of Richmond.
In addition to his parents, “Hafey” was preceded in death by his former wife: Iva A. York Riebsomer; his son: Dennis Riebsomer; three brothers: Arthur “Pat”, Spivey “Spike” and Arlie Riebsomer; three sisters: LaVaughn Hollenbach, Nellie Arnold and Etta Mae Reid; a daughter: Nancy Struewing Grabowski; a grandson: Shane VanWinkle and a cousin: Juanita Peery.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Rev Betty Ann Garrett of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday where memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.
