Edward R. Seasongood, 92, of Connersville, died Sunday afternoon, September 7, 2014, at his residence. Ed was born in Naper, Nebraska, November 17, 1921 to Thelka Voss Seasongood and Robert R. Seasongood, M.D. Following his graduation from high school in Wynot, Nebraska, he earned his bachelor degree at Wayne State in Wayne, Nebraska and attended medical school for two years at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. In 1945, Ed accepted a position as a chemist with Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Inc. in Lawrenceburg, Indiana where he met the former Betty J. Rumsey. They were united in marriage on October 8, 1951 in Aurora, Indiana. Ed continued his teaching career in 1959 when he became employed as a chemistry and biology teacher at Connersville High School. He later accepted a fellowship with the National Science Foundation and earned his Masters Degree in Chemistry Education from Ball State University in Muncie. Ed considered it to be an honor to teach and took special pride in the accomplishments of his former students. He received many honors including membership in the Fayette County Teachers Hall of Fame, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society and recognition as Indiana Science Teacher of the Year. Ed helped design and organize the science department and labs during the construction of Connersville High School. He was a member of the American Federated Teachers, Indiana Retired Teachers and Fayette County Retired Teachers. He also was a member of Warren Lodge #15, F. & A.M., Scottish Rite and a former member of the Elks Lodge. Ed made his church home as a member of Peace Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council. Ed is survived by his wife of over 62 years; three daughters: Debbie Seasongood of Connersville, Susan Thomson and her husband, Ron of Batesville; Beverly Crouse of Naples, Florida; five grandchildren: Rachel Jordan of Richmond, Parker Thomson of Chicago, IL; Jessica Crouse of Tampa, FL; Quinn Thomson of Brisbane, Australia; Byron Crouse and his wife, Brandi of Naples, FL; two great-grandchildren: Hailie –Ann Crouse and Kameryn Crouse; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his son: Thomas E. Seasongood, who died in 1986; and his brother: Raymond Seasongood. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, 701 West Third Street, Connersville, with Rev. Norman E. Dew officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. Friends may visit at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Indiana University Alzheimer Research, Peace Lutheran Church or the Fayette County Foundation.
