Esther Erlewein, 94, of Muncie and former Connersville resident, died Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Bethel Pointe Health and Rehabilitation in Muncie.
Esther was a Franklin County native, born January 1, 1919 to Elmer and Eleanor Phenis Logan and graduated from Connersville High School In 1937. On June 15, 1940, she was married in Fairfield to Maynard Layson who died in 1969. Esther was a member of the Harrisburg Union Church, the Rebekah Lodge in Harrisburg and the Spoon Spinners Extension Homemakers. She had been employed in the cafeterias at Maplewood School and Connersville Junior High. Esther enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid reader and often competed in the food competition at the Fayette County Fair.
Esther is survived by her children and their spouses: Donald Layson of Seattle, Washington; David Layson and Shirley of Corydon; Stephen Layson and Rita of Greensboro, North Carolina; Mark Layson of Tuscon, Arizonia; Denise Reedy and Dr. Richard of Muncie; Michael Layson and Alice of Dixon, California; Marianne Layson of Foster City, California; step-sons: David and Bruce Erlewein; thirteen grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and first husband. Esther was also preceded in death by her second Husband, Joe Erlewein; her daughter: Diane Simon; and four brothers: Carl, Clyde, Earl and Arthur Logan.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Rev. Bill Lowry and Dr. John Stewart of the Harrisburg Union Church officiating. Interment will follow in Springersville Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisburg Union Church.
