Gary Wayne Lakes

Gary Wayne Lakes, 75, died Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. Wayne was born to Clarence and Alice Gabbard Lakes on October 15, 1945 in Oneida, Kentucky. He attended Mckee High School prior to moving to Connersville in 1961. Wayne married Sherilyn Smith on July 1, 1967 at Central Christian Church in Connersville. He was employed with D&M, where he was a proud member of the UAW. More recently, Wayne was employed with CRF First Choice prior to his retirement. He loved hunting mushrooms, raccoon, rabbit and squirrel. Wayne also enjoyed bowling with his friends from D&M and cheering on his beloved UK wildcats. In addition to his wife of fifty-three years, Wayne is survived by his sons: Jeffrey Lakes and his significant other Jessica of Connersville, Christopher Lakes of Shelbyville; brother: Dennie “Briar” Lakes and his wife Patti of Connersville; sisters: Eudell King and her husband Clyde of Mason, Ohio; Niece: Sondra Horning of Lexington, Kentucky; grandchildren: Claire Ann Lakes, Kelli Ray Lakes and Zachary Christopher Lakes; special friends: Ron Gillum, Jack Tressler, Joe and Cheryl Payton, Brandi and Kevin Miller, Donnie and Tammy Pitcher, Kelly and Sharon Pitcher, Wade and Tresa Coffman, Sarah Ritchie, Bridget Talina, Erykah Carter, Jack Dare. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; brother: Vurl Lakes; sisters: Virgie Johns, JoyceAnn Lakes A Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2020 at Showalter Blackwell Long, Myers Chapel, Connersville. Friends may visit the funeral from 12 p.m. until time of service. The family would like to thank Lyndsey Murphy and the hospice team, for their dedication to Wayne’s care and comfort.
