Geraldine M. “Gerry” Vail, 83, formerly of the Harrisburg community, died Friday morning, October 19, 2012, at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky.
A Connersville native, “Gerry” was born February 10, 1929 to James H. and Florence I. Purcell Scott. Her first job was at Miller’s Dairy on 20th Street at the age 14. She was a 1948 graduate of Connersville High School. On June 4, 1948, she was married in Connersville to Henry E. Vail who died April 5, 2002. “Gerry” retired from the Fayette County Employment Office in 1994 following 15 years of service. She had also been employed in the offices at McQuay-Norris and American Kitchens. “Gerry” often professed that the best job she ever had was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Harrisburg Union Church and had taught Sunday School there. “Gerry” loved gardening, her flowers and creating silk floral arrangements. In her leisure time, she enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and volunteering with the Fayette County Red Cross and Fayette Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
“Gerry” is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Michelle “Mike” Nichols and Dennis of Louisville; her grandson: Josh Nichols of Louisville; two sisters: Joann Cooley of Cambridge City, Anna Margaret Sallee of Milton; several nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband of 54 years, “Gerry” was preceded in death by two brothers: James H. Scott and Paul Scott; a sister: Colleen Younts; a uncle: Oscar Mullin, who was like a father to her; a niece: Amy Sallee; and a nephew: Jeff Younts.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Dr. John Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Valley Grove Cemetery in Wayne County. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12 noon Tuesday until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette County Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
