Jack Karian, 75, of Connersville, died Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2014, at his residence.
Jack was born in Jaffa, Palestine, March 24, 1939 to Garabet and Vartanush “Rose” Karakashian Karaoghlanian. He left Palestine with his family in 1948 and they immigrated to New York in 1956 from Amman, Jordan. They settled in the Bronx where Jack earned his General Education Degree while attending night school. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957and was discharged in 1959 from Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. Jack traveled throughout the world and was renowned as one of the country’s top authorities on oriental rugs. He later became the owner and operator of the family business, Central Auto Springs in Bronx, NY where they forged their own steel prior to his retirement in 2003. Jack loved to cook, especially Italian and Middle Eastern cuisine. He was an avid and highly accomplished backgammon player.
Jack is survived by his wife, the former Julie Hancock, whom he married July 10, 1982 in New York City; his sister: Ani Boorojian and her husband, Raymond of Carolina Beach, North Carolina; nieces and nephews: Hope Boorojian of New York City, Garrett Boorojian of Charlotte, NC, Nicole Sims and her children, Charles, Galit and Shai of Hollywood, FL; Paul Karian and his wife, Simone and their children, Hudson and Summer, all of Somers, NY; his mother-in-law: Margaret A. “Peg” Hancock of Connnersville and brother-in-law: Scott Hancock and his wife, Cyndy of Austin, TX.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Sarkis Karian and his father-in-law: James R. Hancock.
Inurnment services will be conducted Friday, June 27th, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, Florida .Memorial contributions may be made to the Fund for Armenian Relief, 630 Second Avenue, NY,NY, 10016.
