James Oscar McKinney, 78, of Laurel, died Sunday, September 8, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
James was born February 11, 1935, in Lancaster, KY., to William Henry and Lora Margaret Denney McKinney. He had attended the Lancaster and Stanford KY., area schools before moving to the Laurel area. On July 28, 1956 in Connersville, James married the former Linda Steed. Oscar retired from Firestone in Brookville, but his love was farming. James also enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his family and especially being a “Papa”.
James is survived by his wife of 57 years; sons: Michael McKinney and his wife, Georgia, Darryl McKinney all of Laurel; daughters: Brenda McKinney, Rhonda McQueen and her husband, David all of Laurel, Judy Murrell and her husband, David of Batesville; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters: Sue Barnes of Oklahoma and Ruby Jean Williams of Gosport; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by a son: Brian Duane McKinney; brothers: Floyd “Jack”, Robert and William Henry, Jr. McKinney; sisters: Flora Jacobs, Sally Montiel, Cella Colvin, Laverne Robinson, Geneva Hamm.
James funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Reverend Eric Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel North Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. where memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
