James Edward Wafford, 64, of Connersville died in the Emergency Room at Fayette Regional Health System on Sunday, March 13, 2016.
James, the son of Earl Clayton and Leota Grivie Wafford, was born in Portland, Indiana on May 20, 1951 and graduated from Dillsboro High School in 1971. James was married to the former, Carolyn Baker, in Millington, Tennessee on May 31, 1972. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS John F. Kennedy during the Vietnam War. Following his four years of service, James took a year break and then enlisted in the United States Army. For the next eight years, James served as Sp5 and was stationed in various locations including Kansas, Germany and Arizona. In his leisure time, James enjoyed reading, fishing and telling jokes. He also enjoyed making costume jewelry for his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of forty-three years, Carolyn, James is survived by his children: Charlotte Wafford, Adam Wafford, Matt Wafford, all of Connersville; his grandchildren: Ethan Frye, Cassie Frye, Ariann Wafford, Nathan Wafford, Laura York, Katelyn “Kat” York; Sydney “Frog” York; twenty-one brothers and sisters; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his grandsons: Austin Frye and Gavin Oliver, his sister: Bonnie Jewell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Dennis Perkins officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Fayette County Veterans Council. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Friday until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
