John Milton Long, 74, of Indianapolis died Friday, September 8, 2023 surrounded by his family.
John was born in Rushville on November 30, 1948 to the late Robert and Betty J. Bush Long. He attended Rushville High School graduating with the class of 1966. John enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Alaska, where he earned several awards including the Expert Infantry Badge and Marksman Badge. Following John’s honorable discharge, he was employed with State Life Insurance Company as Data Processing Manager for over 30 years. Most recently, he was employed with the Indiana State Lottery for many years prior to his retirement in 2012. John was an avid collector of stamps, baseball caps and beer steins. He was a huge fan of NASCAR, IU Basketball, and the Colts. John enjoyed playing golf with his company’s league as well as, visiting car shows. Most of all, John adored spending time with his children, grandchildren and family.
John is survived by his children: John Mark Simpson, Heather McGuire and her significant other, John Miller; grandchildren: Jasmine and Daniel Simpson; siblings: James R. Long, Jeremy C. Long and Kristy, Jill E. Bentlage and Mike; sisters-in-law: Sharon and Vicki Long; mother of his children: Brenda Keefer; many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his brothers: Jay F., Jeffrey A, and Joel D. Long; sister-in-law: Deborah Long.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00a.m., Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Showalter Blackwell Long, Myers Chapel, Connersville. Burial will immediately follow at Orange North Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday, September 15, 2023 from 4:00p.m, until 7:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jay F. Long Scholarship fund.
