John W. “Bill” Rhonemus, 89, of Liberty, died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Golden Living Golden Rule Nursing Home in Richmond.
John was born in Hartford City, Indiana, on September 14, 1925, to Dr. John C. and Enid Orr Rhonemus. John was a 1943 graduate of Short High School. A World War II Veteran, John enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in Richmond on July 6, 1943, and proudly served his country in the Southwest Pacific from June 24, 1944 to March 25, 1945. John was involved in the fighting at Iwo Jima and was one of the three survivors left in his group. On June 10, 1951, John married Glenna Dance in Liberty and was employed as a Supervisor at Dana Corporation, retiring after thirty years of service. John was a member of Edwards Memorial United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #122 and VFW Post # 1472 both of Liberty, 40 & 8 # 1040 in Connersville, and the Marine Corps League of Richmond. John enjoyed riding his motorcycle and using ham radios.
John is survived by a son Dr. Jeffrey Rhonemus and wife Dianne of Liberty; two grandchildren: Alison Rhonemus and Brian Rhonemus and wife Erica. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of sixty-one years, who died February 3, 2013; and a sister Lora Jean Sheridan.
Private graveside services will be conducted at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Wayne County at the convenience of the family with Rev. Scott Bell of Edwards Memorial United Methodist Church officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Marine Corps, American Legion Post # 122 and the VFW Post 1472 of Liberty.
