John Selm, 66, of Connersville, died Monday morning, March 3, 2014, at his residence.
John was born in Connersville on July 31, 1947 to Norman and Wilma Smith Selm. In 1965, he graduated from Connersville High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps the following year. John served as a Corporal during the Vietnam War and his decorations included the Purple Heart Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star and the Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. John was kind-hearted and was an avid reader. He loved cats and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and listening to music.
John is survived by his sister: Janet Houghland; niece: Tressa Paul; two great-nephews: Brandon Paul & Tyler Houghland; one great-niece: Amanda Paul, all of San Antonio, Texas; two cousins: Sandy Scott & her husband, Jim of Rushville; Jean Frasher & her husband, Raland of Connersville.
In addition to his mother, John was preceded in death by his step-father: Charles Porter and his nephew: Dale “Butch” Houghland.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, with Rev. James R. Orr, officiating. Interment will follow in Village Creek Cemetery with military honors by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday where memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
