Joseph F. “Joe” Patton, 87, of Connersville, died Wednesday evening, October 3, 2012, at Fayette Regional Health System where he had been a patient for two weeks.
Joseph was born October 14, 1924 in Paris, Kentucky to Floyd and Bertha Cruse Patton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served as a gunner aboard the destroyer, USS Fiske that was sunk during WW II. In the years following the war, Joe enjoyed attending the annual reunions of Navy veterans. In 1991, he retired from Visteon following 45 years of service. He was a member of Park Place Church of God and had lived in Laurel for many years. Joe liked listening to bluegrass music and had enjoyed square dancing with his wife. He liked to pass the time with crossword puzzles, crocheting and working in the yard. Joe was a hard worker and was known to be a jokester. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Joe is survived by two daughters: Sandra K. Montgomery and Beverly A. Shelton, both of Connersville; eight grandchildren and their spouses: Michael Davis of San Francisco, California; Ryan Montgomery of Louisville, Kentucky; Brooke Montgomery of Connersville; Anne E. Harrison and Kristopher of Washington state; Bryan C. Patton of Jacksonville, Alabama; Kyle J Patton and Danielle, Natalie S. Mitchell and Jarod, all of Lubbock, Texas; Stephen J. Shelton and Mary of Sebree, Kentucky; twelve great-grandchildren; his daughter-in-law: Christy M. Patton of Lubbock, Texas; a sister: Ida L. of New Salem; nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, the former Lila Robinson who died January 10, 1999; his son: Garry J. Patton, M.D.; his brother: Earl Patton; his granddaughter: Brandy Shelton; and his special friend: Dorothy “Dottie” Kramer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Joe’s great-grandson, Branson Montgomery, officiating. Interment will follow in Laurel North Cemetery near Laurel with military honors provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday where memorial contributions may be made to the Park Place Church of God.
