Leona May Jones, 81, of the Abington community, died Thursday evening, August 15, 2013 at her home in the care of her four daughters and surrounded by her loving family.
May was born April 13, 1932 in Brownsville to Leroy V. and Vivian Lyons Clevenger. She had attended Brownsville High School where she was a basketball cheerleader. On June 3, 1950, she married at St. Bridget’s Rectory to Raymond M. Jones who died November 19, 2012. She was a member of the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. For 25 years, she was employed at Woodruff’s Supermarket, as a cashier and later as the produce manager. She also had worked at Whitewater State Park for 23 years. May enjoyed bingo and was a basketball fan. Her love of the ocean and water, led her to teach all of her grandchildren how to swim.
May is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Kathy Ramey and Mark of Liberty, Karen Faverty and Jon of Spring Hill, Florida; Karla Kaufman and Ron of Richmond, Kendra Brooks of Lakeland, Florida; two brothers: Donald Clevenger of Liberty, David Clevenger and his wife, Peggy of Connersville; her sister: Mildred Carter of Richmond; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, May is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years; brothers: Harold, Norman and Jim Clevenger; and her son-in-law: Jim Brooks.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Monday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty. Friends may visit at the funeral home, from 9 a.m. Monday until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the Reid Hospice.
