Lois M. Lubbers, 85, of Connersville, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Heritage House of Connersville.
Lois was born in Hull, Iowa, March 21, 1928, to Nick and Effie Workman Vander Kooi. Following her graduation from high school in Clinton, Wisconsin, she earned her Bachelor degree from Central College in Pella, Iowa. Lois later attended Ball State University in Muncie to receive her Master degree. On June 5, 1953, she was married in Iowa to Roy J. Lubbers. They resided in Connersville from 1957 to 1994. Lois was employed as a teacher for over forty years and retired from Frazee School in Connersville after twenty years as the first grade teacher. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was an active member of the Riley Hospital Cheer Guild. In her leisure time, Lois enjoyed reading Christian books, crossword puzzles, and playing games with Roy and the grandkids. She and Roy traveled extensively, visiting Hawaii, the Holy Lands, Australia and most of the United States.
Lois is survived by her sons: Danny Lubbers of Indianapolis; Doug Lubbers & his wife, Jama of Connersville; grandchildren: Danielle Lubbers; Juscinda Houze & her husband, Jeff, and Megan Gibbs, Lewis Gibbs & spouse, all of Connersville; three great-grandchildren: Drake Kidd, Ciara Houze & Madison Houze; her brother & his wife: Kenneth Vander Kooi & Theresa of Bradenton, Florida; her sister: Sylvia Romberg of Sheldon, Iowa; several nieces & nephews.
In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years who died October 18, 2006, her sister: Joyce Isaacs and two brothers: Richard and Wilmar Vander Kooi.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Friday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Robert Stewart officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 2 to 5 pm Friday where memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or to the family to help defray funeral expenses.
