Mabel C. “Nanny” Charles, 91 of Connersville, died Wednesday night, August 13, 2014, at her residence.
A Leslie County, Kentucky native, Nanny was born on, August 15, 1922. After high school, she attended beauty school in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nanny served as a recruiter and parachute rigger for The Women’s Air Corp, informally known as Air WACs. On Labor Day Weekend in 1967, Nanny was married to Willard C. “Jack” Charles. She was employed with Visteon and its predecessors for thirty seven years, retiring in 1988. Nanny loved to bake, cook, and tend to her geraniums. She also enjoyed watching doves, which returned annually to nest on her porch. Nanny cherished her family and her poodle, Sammy.
Nanny is survived by her daughter: Sandy Sturgeon; her grandchildren: Angela “Nicky” Tipton and her husband, Troy; Julie Maze, all of Connersville; Ralph “Eddie” Sturgeon, Jr. of Plainfield; her great-grandchildren: Ashley Tipton of Connersville; Corporal Adam Tipton, who is currently based in North Carolina serving the U.S. Marines; Sylvia Boling of Connersville; Luke Sturgeon; Jakob Sturgeon, both of Plainfield; Starr Maze of Connersville; her great-great grandchildren: Ryder Trent and Elijah Boling, both of Connersville; her dog Sammy, her constant companion.
In addition to her parents, Albin and Iona Fowler, Nanny is preceded in death by her husband.
A family gathering will be conducted at their convenience. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette Regional Health System Hospice or to the Fayette Regional Health System Foundation.
