Mable “Sue” Harris, 91, died Friday, February 22, 2012 in the St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis, with her family at her side.
She was born in Connersville, March 8, 1920 to Samuel and Estella Marie Buckley Davis. She was married to Donald Harris for 58 years prior to his death in 2008. Sue is survived by her daughter, Rosalind H. Webb of Indianapolis, sons David W. Harris and his wife, Rose of Woodstock, Illinois, and Jeffrey L. Harris and his wife, Joy of Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as seven grandchildren. Trained as a nurse in Cincinnati, Sue enlisted in the Army in November 1942, serving as a Lieutenant in the European Theater until the war’s end. Under the GI Bill, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 from Indiana University and worked briefly in Indianapolis prior to marriage. Sue was a loving wife and mother, had a great sense of humor and an openness to new experiences. She was a devoted golfer and an avid member of Indiana Ladies Golf Association, served on the Board of the Fayette County Public Library, and was active in Coterie Club, Tri Kappa Sorority and bridge club. She and Don were enthusiastic travelers and visited many countries throughout their lifetimes. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Connersville and the Coronado Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, during the winters.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sue was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Davis.
Memorial services will be conducted at the Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville on Saturday, March 3 at 2 PM with Rev Dave Galbraith of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral from 1 pm Saturday until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette County Public Library.
