Marjorie A. Hoppes Stevens, 87, of Liberty, died Saturday morning, June 11, 2011, at Reid Hospital, Richmond.
A native and lifelong resident of Union County, she was born March 4, 1924 to Walter and Estel Shepler Hoppes. In 1942, she graduated from Alquina High School in Fayette County. Marjorie had been employed for several years as the cook at Brownsville school and had also managed the Panoramic Apartments for eleven years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #122. Marjorie was an excellent cook and housekeeper and loved to takes rides and play cards, especially euchre.
Marjorie is survived by her husband of over 63 years, Robert E. Stevens, whom she married July 5, 1947 in Rushville; a son: James Robert Stevens and his wife, Tressie of Liberty; a brother: Gerald Hoppes and his wife, Christene of Liberty; two sisters: Carmilea Antrim of Liberty, Shirley Powell and her husband, Maurice of Cambridge City; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, including Linda Sayne of Liberty.
In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her first husband: Donald Stevens, her son: Gary Eugene Stevens; a grandson: Seth Stevens; and a brother: Lowell Hoppes.
Public graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at West Point Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.
