Nilah L. May, 84, of the Orange community, died Saturday morning, April 30, 2011, in the emergency room at Fayette Regional Health System.
Nilah was a native of Orange, born January 9, 1927 to Charles A. and Mable Bever Medd. In 1945, she graduated from Orange High School and was married August 9, 1945 in Greensburg to Robert H. May. Nilah’s first job was with Farm Bureau Insurance and she was later employed for eleven years at Fayette Bank and Trust Company. After her children entered school, she was employed at Central State Bank and later, Fifth Third Bank for 22 years before retiring. Nilah was a member of Orange Christian Church, where she had served as treasurer, the Order of the Eastern Star, Club 16 Women’s Group and had been a 4-H leader. Nilah enjoyed reading, crocheting and growing African violets. She also liked to sew and was especially proud of the clothes she made for her family.
Nilah is survived by two children and their spouses: Jerry R. May and Sandra of the Orange community, Cindy Johnson and Doug of Williamsburg; a son-in-law: Marvin Pitcher and Connie of Connersville; five grandchildren and their spouses: Chad Pitcher and Melissa of New Palestine, Jana Johnson, Jessica Johnson, both of Williamsburg, Greg May and Audrey of McCordsville, Chris May and Jody of Glenwood; three great-grandchildren: Maelin Pitcher, Makiya Johnson, Annabelle May; several nieces and nephews. Her family is very appreciative to her caregivers: Elizabeth Heimsoth, Carol Robinson and Jennifer Gough.
In addition to her parents, Nilah was preceded in death by her daughter, Glenna Pitcher, who died January 18, 1982, her husband of 56 years, who died April 25, 2002, two brothers: Lowell Medd and Robert Medd; and a sister: Lois Robeson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Rev. Mark Powell of the Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Orange Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday.
