Connersville

Former Connersville firefighter, Norman L. Brown, 86, died Wednesday evening, May 6, 2015, at Fayette Regional Health System. Norman was a Fayette County native, born September 6, 1928 to William Howard and Mary E. Herbert Brown and was a 1946 graduate of Harrisburg High School. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a rifleman with the 7th Infantry during deployment to Korea as a corporal. Norman’s military decorations included the Korean Service Medal with one bronze service star. Following his military service, Norman was married at the Fairview Christian Church on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953 to the former Mary Ellen Root who died November 13, 2010. For over 26 years, he was employed as a meat cutter at Standard Grocery and later worked at Rihm’s Meats, Cambridge City. In 1977, he retired from the Connersville Fire Department. Norman had been a member of the First Baptist Church for over 56 years and was an active member of the Lions Club. He enjoyed golf, Indiana University basketball, fishing, traveling and hunting mushrooms. He most loved spending time with his family and friends. Norman also enjoyed being a member of Historic Connersville, Inc., Hoosier Blue and Gray Civil War Roundtable, AMVETS and former member of the Elks Lodge. Norman is survived by his children and their spouses: LuAnn Fox and Greg of Connersville; Dennis L. Brown and Lynn of St. Charles, Missouri; his grandchildren: Jessica Morris and her husband, Jason of Connersville; Nathan Brown and Abby Brown, both of St. Charles, MO; two great-grandchildren: Luke and Harley Morris; his sister: Ruth Riebsomer of Connersville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and his wife of over 53 years, Norman was preceded in death by an infant brother, a brother: William H. Brown, Jr.; and four sisters: Helen Derringer, June Hawkins, Martha Lykins and Phyllis Whipple. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church at 12th and Grand, with Pastor Mal Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of to the Fayette County Cancer Society.
