Owen Lawrence Smith, 70, of Liberty, died early Friday morning, September 14, 2012, at his residence.
Owen was born December 11, 1941 in Hico, West Virginia, to Luther and Isabelle Miller Smith and attended school in College Corner, Ohio. In November of 1963, he was married in Liberty to the former Doris J. Remley. Owen retired in 1996 from Perfect Circle/Dana Corporation, Richmond after thirty years of service as a machinist. Following retirement, he was employed at Cox’s New Market in Connersville. Owen enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He liked to hunt and had the ability to repair almost anything he tried.
Owen is survived by his wife of over 48 years; his children: Sandra Turney of Connersville, Sheryl Lakes and her husband, Chuck of Liberty; Roger Smith and his wife, Dorothy of College Corner, Ohio; his grandchildren: Brandon Smith, Jessica Rose, Cherokee and Nevada Lakes, Chrissy, Rachel, Katie and Austin Smith; several great-grandchildren; two brothers: Luther Smith, Jr. and his wife, Norma of Lansing, West Virginia; James Smith of Adrian, Michigan; three sisters: Edith Mardis and Marion of Hico, West Virginia; Gay Bennett of Fayetteville, West Virginia; Ginny Bennett of Maryland; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Owen was preceded in death by his brother: John Smith and his sister: Opal Scaggs.
Public visitation will be conducted from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty. Private graveside services will be conducted at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens near Boston in Wayne County.
