Connersville, IN Rick D. Higgs, 62 of Connersville, died Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Reid Health, Richmond. The son of Richard G. Higgs, Sr. and Janice Grimme Kirn, Rick was born in Connersville, February 19, 1954 and was a 1972 graduate of Connersville High School. After graduation, Rick enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Rick was an accomplished machinist and was employed at Roots Blower Company. On December 16, 2013, Rick graduated from Indiana University East with a Bachelor’s Degree of General Studies. Rick was a friend of Bill W. for many years and was a trusted servant of the District 40 Recovery Community and voluntarily served at all levels of support. He gained a very close spiritual relationship with God and would have celebrated twelve years of sobriety on November 30th. Rick was an excellent fisherman and greatly enjoyed tending to his plants. He loved to learn and was an avid reader that easily understood intricate subjects, including military history. In his leisure time, Rick collected coins, arrowheads and other Native American artifacts. His favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren. Rick is survived by his mother: Janice Grimme Kirn of Connersville; his children: Tyler Higgs and his wife, Elizabeth of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Makenzie Higgs and her boyfriend, Randall Robinson; Amanda Sizemore; Heather Johnson and her husband, Allen; all of Connersville; Jennifer Sizemore of Michigan City; his grandchildren: Haley, Montana, Dawson, Dylan, Madison, Dessa, Haylie, Lincoln, Liam, Gabriel, Justin, Kyra and Freya; his siblings: Robin A. Burns; Tami D. Williams; Christy E. White; Tim Higgs; Mark A. Higgs; David M. Higgs; Debbie Callahan; David L. Shell; Richard W. Shell; Bruce W. Shell; several nieces and nephews. Rick was preceded in death by his father: Richard G. Higgs, Sr.; his maternal grandparents: Gleda and Charles Grimme; his step-mother: Phyllis Higgs; his brother: Richard “Dick” Higgs, Jr; his sister: Linda Shell Blough; and his granddaughter: Alexis Shellberg. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday, October 24, 2016 at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville followed by Military Honors by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of service where memorial contributions can be made In Memory of Rick D. Higgs.
