Roger F. Doty, 79, of Indianapolis and former Connersville resident, died Tuesday morning, June 10, 2014, at Robin Run Village in Indianapolis.
A native of Paola, Kansas, Roger was born October 14, 1934, the only child of Fern Philander and Murriel Alyeen Young Doty. He was a 1952 graduate of William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri and earned a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kansas in 1956. From 1956 to 1958, Roger served as a First Lieutenant with the 7th Army stationed in Germany. He had been employed in research and development at Maytag in Newton, Iowa and Philco-Ford in Connersville. He had also owned and operated The Haley Press in Connersville. For 18 years, Roger was the vice-president of Engineering at Jenn-Air in Indianapolis and held twelve patents for products he developed while at Maytag and Jenn-Air.
Roger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Connersville where he had served as elder, deacon and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was an accomplished woodworker and had restored a 1951 Crosley automobile. Roger was instrumental in forming the former John Conner Players theater group in Connersville and enjoyed playing the guitar and banjo.
Roger is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, the former Ellen J. Paulson whom he married July 8, 1956 in Merriam, Kansas; his children and their spouses: Marc L. Doty and Diana of Brownsburg; Marcia A. Doty-DeBolt and Michael of Indianapolis; and his grandson: Christopher Doty of Lafayette. Roger’s parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Connersville, with Rev. Judy Fitchett of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12:30 Saturday until the time of service.
