Verla Mcclure

Verla McClure, 105, formerly of College Corner, died peacefully Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe, Ohio. Verla was born on January 6, 1911, in Morning Sun, Ohio, to the late Orval and Edna (nee: Charles) Bishop. She grew up near Fairhaven and Eaton, OH and graduated from Dixon Centralized High School. Verla attended Cedarville University and Miami University, graduating with a B.S. in Education. She was united in marriage to Clem McClure on June 15, 1943. Verla taught for 38 years in the Dixon Centralized and College Corner Schools. Verla and Clem farmed in College Corner area where they also donated land for the Methodist parsonage, the cemetery addition, and the ball park. Upon retiring from farming, they moved to Oxford. They moved to Mt. Pleasant Retirement Home in November of 1981. Clem predeceased Verla on February 21, 1990, after 48 years of marriage. Verla was also predeceased by her brother Myron Bishop and a sister Miriam Ridgeway. She was a member of the College Corner United Methodist Church and Monroe Methodist Church. Verla loved to travel, read, knit and play cards. The Middletown Hospital gave her a plaque of recognition for knitting and donating over one thousand hats for newborn babies. She will be remembered for her sweetness of spirit, her tact, and her cheerfulness. Verla loved people, especially children, and was loved in return by all who knew her. She was a lady in every sense and will be sadly missed by all of us. Verla is survived by nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, at Showalter Blackwell Tilton Funeral Home, Baker Chapel, in College Corner, with Rev. Mick Miller of the College Corner United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in College Corner Cemetery.
