Vivian F. Smith, 86, of Connersville, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Hickory Creek of Connersville.
Vivian was born in New Castle, December 31, 1925, the only child of Donald and Mildred Lefter Cook. On July 29, 1942, she was married in Manchester, Tennessee to Charles W. Smith, who died January 16, 1942. Vivian was an active member of the Democrat Party, working as the deputy recorder with Edith Champe. She also served as the City Clerk Treasurer for two terms from 1972 to 1979, and later was employed as the manager of the local HUD office. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and they had attended the Montreal Olympics. Vivian was a long-time collector of Yellow Stamps, and had earned a trip to Hawaii. Dancing was another favorite past-time and she and her husband had appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show several times. Vivian was a member of Central Christian Church and was an avid sports fan, supporting the Connersville Spartans and Atlanta Braves.
Vivian is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Sheri and Gary Wayne Lakes of Connersville; two grandsons: Jeffrey Wayne Lakes of Connersville; Christopher Lakes and his wife, Melissa, of Shelbyville; two great-grandchildren: Claire Ann Lakes and Zachary Christopher Lakes; nieces and nephews.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 68 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Rev. James Orr officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette County Cancer Society.
