Vurl Lakes, 79, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Vurl was born June 13, 1933 in Jackson County, Kentucky to Clarence and Alice Mae Gabbard Lakes. In 1953, he entered the U.S. Army and was attached to the 135th Infantry in Ft. Benning, Georgia. Vurl was married to the former Lloy Baldwin October 10, 1959 in Cincinnati, Ohio. For over 27 years, he was employed with the B & O Railroad based in Cincinnati and retired in 1980 as a yardmaster. Vurl enjoyed smoking his pipe and liked to hunt and fish. He was a NASCAR fan, following Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Vurl also was a sports fan and enjoyed University of Kentucky basketball.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Vurl is survived by his children and their spouses: Monica Ouziel of Palm Harbor, Florida; Douglas Lakes and Lynn of Corinth, Kentucky; Gregory Lakes, Don Lakes and Annette, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren and their spouses: Sean and Alana Blythe of Loveland, Ohio; Ashley Lakes and Josh Saylor of Williamstown, Kentucky; Tyler Lakes, Dylan Lakes, both of Corinth, Kentucky; David, Rachel, and Jack Ouziel, all of Palm Harbor, Florida; Mariah, Jacob, Dale, Nora and Margot Lakes, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren: Connor Saylor, McKynzie Saylor, Dane Blythe, Reid Blythe and Colton Lakes; his siblings and their spouses: Eudell King and Clyde of Mason, Ohio; Dennie Lakes and Patti; Wayne Lakes and Sheri, all of Connersville; several nieces, nephews, special friends and loved ones.
In addition to his parents, Vurl was preceded in death by a sister, Virgie Johns and an infant sister, Joyce Lakes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery with military honors by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12 noon Tuesday until the time of service.
