William I. Powell, 89, of Connersville died Friday, July 22, 2011, at Heritage House and Rehabilitation Center in Connersville.
On January 13, 1922 William was born to William H. and Grace Danials Powell in Connersville. Following his graduation from Connersville High School in 1941, he entered the United States Navy where he attained the rank of Ship Fitter 1st Class. After returning home from the service, William started working at Dresser Roots and retired after 37 years of employment. William was a lifetime member of American Legion, and a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Veterans. He enjoyed being in his yard, working in the vegetable garden, listening to the Cincinnati Reds, fishing, and hunting in his youth.
William is survived by his children: Vickie S. Robinson, George W. Workman and his wife: Tammy; Robert A. Lynch; a brother: Francis Powell, all of Connersville; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
William was preceded in death by: his parents; wife; four brothers: Ray Kenneth Powell, Harold Powell, Wayne Powell, Donald Powell; four sisters: Margarite Carter, Louise Carter, Rose Marie Wilhelm, Ruby Amyx.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel Connersville with Reverend Sue Cartee of Liberty officiating. Interment will follow Dale Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
