Woodrow Larry “Woody” Oliver, 67, of Carthage died unexpectedly, Friday morning, September 4, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.
Woody was born May 19, 1948 to Joe and Creamy Rice Oliver in Perry County, Kentucky. In 1968, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War until his discharge in 1970. On February 14, 1970, Woody was married to the former Betty Kelley, in Liberty. In 2005, he retired from Wal-Mart where he had been employed as a butcher. Woody had also been employed at Connersville Seamless Gutters and Textron Automotive. For many years, he has attended the First Church of the Nazarene with his wife. Recently, Woody began attending Victorious Life Church of the Nazarene in Indianapolis. In his leisure time, he greatly enjoyed watching baseball, basketball and football, especially the Dallas Cowboys, as Woody was an avid Cowboys fan. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and cooking. Woody especially loved spending time with his grandson, Cameron, who was Pap’s pride and joy.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Betty Oliver, Woody is survived by his daughters: Tracy R. Dill; Christy A. Hatfield and her husband Phillip; his grandson: Cameron S. Hatfield; his siblings and their spouses: Estes Oliver and Shirley; Gladys Bennett and Rick; Thelma Johnson and Douglas, all of Connersville; Edith Throop and Bill of Milton; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Woody is preceded in death by his sisters: Helen Rose Asbury; Lizzy Belle Oliver; his father-in-law: Clyde Kelley; his son-in-law: Casey Dill; his nephew: J.W. Throop; his uncles: Hargis Oliver and his wife, Elizabeth; Jerry Rice and his wife, Flossie; his brother-in-law: Dempsey Asbury.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 11, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel with Reverend Kirby Popplewell, Reverend James Kelley and Reverend Randy Sherwood officiating. Interment will follow in Lick Creek Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Fayette County Veteran’s Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday from 12 noon until the time of service where memorial contributions may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
